If you own a diesel or plan on buying a diesel, I definitely recommend this video for you, because there’s just some things you have to understand about owning one of these trucks. A lot of people have emailed me about getting ready to buy their first Diesel and they’ve had questions. So this video is going to be helpful. Now I did borrow this Ram truck from Larry H, Miller, chrys, your Jeep Dodge Ram.

It is available for sale. You guys can probably tell this is my truck. Unfortunately, I can’t get a Ford truck here, because I can’t clone myself so yeah. I don’t have the power show, but this is going to obviously be for those diesel engines as well. Let me get this out the way really quickly’90s and early 2000 diesel trucks are not the same as trucks today they’re.

Just not. You have to treat these engines totally different. I had friends who used to have diesel trucks and they would let them idle for hours and hours and hours at a time. Now here is the silent killer for diesel engines ready for this diesel fuel dilution. If you own a diesel truck – and you don’t know about this and how to combat it, this is partially one of the reasons why I think some people’s diesels fail.

I think that’s the year where they just were having a bunch of problems, but I do believe that some of those issues could be related to diesel dilution. Now, what is that? Let’S take a quick peek online at diesel.

Hub.Com and they’ll explain a little bit better than I can. The article goes on to say: FU dilution is aru, a diesel engine’s greatest adversary. It occurs normally, however, it can cause excessive wear and become the ultimate demise of an engine in severe cases. It is for this reason that the concentration of diesel fuel in engine oil is monitored in certain industries, through periodic oil analysis performed by a qualified laboratory.

What is fuel dilution, fuel dilution or less commonly crank case? Dilution refers to the dilution of engine oil by diesel. Fuel fuel dilution is an entirely normal phenomenon that occurs naturally in every internal combustion. It is of particular importance in diesel engines because they rely on a compression ignition cycle and therefore combustion efficiency is entirely dependent on engine temperature, specifically that of the combustion chamber. In theory, with an obvious point of diminishing return, the colder, the combustion chamber, the greater the degree of fuel dilution that occurs here.

It is remember how I told you guys that diesel tech have told me to just stick with the 15w 40 on my truck if you’re looking at the Rams, it’s a 10w30 now. Obviously, if you want that 5w 40, That’s the synthetic and you can still get a synthetic with this 10w30 and 15 w40 as well. I just use just the conventional whatever they have at the dealership, because that’s what’s good enough for the truck, and so that’s what I use. So let me just read that really quickly.

So right there. I think we hit the nail on the head. If you are someone who is running a 5w 40, I would 100 % get your oil analyzed by a laboratory. I would just go ahead and do it I’m probably going to do it for my truck too, just as like a piece of mind, because I’m planning on keeping this truck a little bit longer than I have my other trucks cuz.

I love this truck so with that. I want to make sure I’m not going to have issues in the future with this pickup and in order to do that, you have to understand a few things. You guys heard earlier on. One of the reasons why you could potentially have dilution is how these engines are designed and built. So compression is what you need for these engines and heat.

I got these gauges here. I love this because what I’ve been doing lately I’ve been kind of testing the temperatures for, like my engine, oil and my coolant. So if you don’t know, if you’re new to diesel trucks, most diesel trucks come standard with a engine block heater, especially in the coder climates now, I do know that in some climates like, for example, in Florida, some trucks are delivered. Without that engine block heater, you can get that installed.

This truck also, let see actually no. This truck does not have one so yeah. This truck doesn’t have one, but the engine block heater will keep that engine oil and the engine coolant at operating temperature or close to operating temperature. That way, it reduces the warm-up time on the engine, something else to consider. Most diesel engines use glow plugs and before you can start, the truck actually was right there.

It just went away really fast. Hopefully you guys see right there so, where that fuel came up, that’s the um icon that pops up that. Let you know that you have to wait till the uh. I guess the combustion is at a certain temperature on Ram trucks. They have a grid heater, so they don’t have glow plugs for Ram trucks, but my truck and Ford’s power stroke has glow plugs, and so before you can start the truck, you have to make sure that icon goes away now.

https://handsminimaxx.comSomething else to consider if you own a ram truck I’ve, never seen a ram truck, not have a high idle switch, so Rams is probably the best and easiest here too, I I I think that is pretty easy to use. All you have to do is just turn on the cruise control and you can set it a little bit higher. They actually let you customize how high you want it to go. You can see that RPM moving up right, so theirs can do it almost at500 RPMs. I think on the GM trucks, it’s like 1,200 RPMs Max because they have two levels but Ram allows you to customize where you want that at and if you live in these colder climat like today, it’s only 51.

So it’s not that code outside. I still recommend if you are getting down into the low 30s 20s, I would probably consider plugging in your truck. I would even almost consider plugging it in in for the engine block heater. That is at these temperatures too, even if it’s just for 45 minutes, because you don’t want fuel dilution to affect your engine oil. What causes fuel dilution?

The article says the normal cause of fuel dilution is blowby. The escaping of gases between the piston rings and cylinder bore in an Ideal World. A piston was still perfectly against the cylinder wall. However, no cylinder is perfectly round, no bore is perfectly smooth and there is no perfect seal. In fact, your engine has a cross-hatch pattern of microscopic grooves purposely etched into each cylinder.

A certain amount of fuel and exhaust gases will escape past the seal between the piston rings and cylinder. Since fuel dilution is completely normal, it is excessive amounts of fuel in the engine. Oil, that is of concern there, are a number of activities and events that contribute to excessive fuel dilution as well as ways to prevent it. I won’t Bore You by reading every single thing that causes fuel dilution, but the first thing I want to talk about is wet stacking, so wet stacking is a phenomenon that occurs in compression ignition engines, whereas a gasoline engine, for example, ignites its air fuel mixture with A spark at the appropriate time in initiated combustion, a compression ignition engine which is a diesel, relies solely and entirely on the heat of the air charge in the cylinder during in an injection event to initiate combustion milliseconds after the fuel is injected.

So if you are just jumping inside your truck turning on and driving in these low temperature examples, this is where you’re going to have fuel and unburned fuel in the combustion that will basically slide between the cylinders and the oil. So, in a lot of cases, if you’re someone – that’s just on the go a lot and you don’t have time for warm UPS, things like that, I would probably recommend changing your oil a little bit sooner or going to get an analysis done for your diesel. There’S a few more things there listed for wet stacking, but the next thing that they talk about is poor in or neglected maintenance, so that kind of plays into the first thing wet stacking. So if you are someone who’s, not letting that engine get up to operating temperatures and the combustion is not hot enough and oil and diesel fuel is starting to mix together you’re going to have to understand that neglected maintenance is going to probably wear out your engine. A lot faster because, as I said earlier, Ram trucks, for example, are having lifter and cam issues, and this could be a contribution to that, especially on trucks that do have more miles than others right.

If you have probably 50,000 plus miles and you’re not changing that oil often cuz, I think on Ram trucks, they still say 15,000 miles, because these trucks use 3 gallons of engine oil. So it’s a lot of oil. I believe on these, it’s like two gallons. So if you’re not getting that oil changed often enough, that could be an issue. They also talk about aftermarket performance devices and modifications.

https://handsminimaxx.comI’Ll kind of read through that real quickly as a general rule of thumb, more smoke results in a greater degree of fuel dilution. In addition to other forms of oil contamination, I’m just going to break it down really quickly if you’re getting a tune on your truck and it’s not someone who knows what they’re doing, if they’re not able to tune that engine effectively not to have no smoke coming Out the back, then, this could potentially create that dilution because, as you guys know,

if you see white smoke coming out of the back of your tailpipe, that’s like basically unburned Diesel, and that means that the mixture or the combustion is not accurately mixing to get the Perfect burn so again, if you’re looking to get tunes things like that, you want to make sure that the person that you’re getting it done by knows what they’re doing and can tune it effectively regeneration, p injection cycle, so fuel dilution became an even greater concern with The introduction of diesel particulate filters there. It is again, this is another issue like I’ve been really thinking about, doing a weight loss program, I’m going to be doing a video on it and when this popped up, this is what got me a little frustrated, because it says here during a regen cycle, a Significant amount of heat is required in the exhaust system to allow these particulat to burn off. Fuel is therefore required to be injected into the exhaust stream,

raising the temperature and creating conditions in which these particules can be completely burnt and emitted from the tail pipe. So, post injection cycle injecting fuel into the cylinder during the end of the exhaust stroke, so in other words, if your truck goes into a region and it needs to clean out that DPF system well, this is another issue with the potential effects of you having contaminated Engine oil, which means you have less osity happening.

So if you do a lot of City driving a lot of idling a lot of stop and go traffic where you’re not able to get that DPF hot by itself without it needing it to go into a region. This is another issue that you’re going to have long term with your truck. That’S why a lot of people love for me to do videos on gas trucks, because people just don’t want to deal with this crap anymore and I’m serious. I don’t know why people can’t see this like this is a so basically if you’ve ever wondered why our engines don’t last as long as they used to, is it’s because we have these systems in here that create more problems than they help with I mean if You’Re spending $ 95,000 on a freaking truck and you can’t remove stuff that will make your truck more reliable. I mean I just don’t get it now, I’m not talking about weight loss program.

I’M just saying it just doesn’t make sense why people can’t see this stuff like this is insane literally what they try to help prevent is actually hurting the people buying the dang truck. In other words, they don’t want you to buy the truck. That’S just how I see it, I’m sorry. Now they do talk about closed, crank, Casas ventilation systems. You can read there, but there’s really no way to avoid you know the dilution you’re just going to have to get that engine oil analyzed to make sure that you should be doing it at either 7500 Mi, 5,000, Mi or even sooner, sadly, which sucks because there’s So much engine oil that they use.

I mean, as I said, 3 gallons for the Ram trucks right. It’S just a lot of engine. No, so you would think that it would combat the dilution that you would have over the course of maybe 5 to 10,000 Mi, but at the end of the day I would say: get it analyzed, I’m going to do it too. I’M going to definitely do it. The next Oil Change I get and I’m probably going to get the um Banks engine oil pan, because I saw a video just recently that Banks did and they showed that there’s probably about a quar of oil – that’s left in there even after they drain it, because The I call it nipple is too uh.

https://handsminimaxx.comI can’t remember how they said it, but it’s basically inverted inside of the pan. That’S the best way. I can say it, and so the oil can’t drain around it. So for me personally, I think that that potentially could be an issue long term for these trucks, especially for people who do have issues with dilution, But be sure to give your thoughts down below.
